Bucks Vs. Does

Does

Advantages Disadvantages
  • More Active than Bucks - they are very active and a lot of fun to watch as they climb everywhere
  • Smaller. Adults weigh roughly 200-500g
  • Smoother coat
  • Rarely scent-mark territory
  • They come on heat every 5 days which means they can fall pregnant if they mate with a buck, this is something that needs to be considered if you have other rats.
  • More prone to mammary tumours and may have to have an operation to remove it

Bucks

Advantages Disadvantages
  • Larger. Adults weigh roughly 400-700g
  • More laid back than Does - they are generally more affectionate and enjoy cuddles and are more likely to remain in the same place for more than 5 seconds!!
  • Slight musky smell to their coat
  • Their coat isn't as smooth as does
  • Bucks occasionally scent mark their territory
  • Bucks can become aggressive if their hormonal levels get high, if this happens they may have to be castrated
